Oh good, it's a TV remake of the Timberlake album?

No, it's the reincarnation of Seth Bullock?

I like Tim Olyphant, I love Elmore Leonard, and FX has a good track record. The reviews are mostly excellent, with a few noteworthy dissenters. So why do I not have a particularly good feeling about this? Maybe it's because the trailers have a frivolous Burn Notice-y vibe, and I only find that series moderately enjoyable in small doses. It seems a taller order than it should be to adapt Leonard's very telegraphic work well, as most of the adapted features are failures or very mixed bags. But if they get it right, this could be fun. The pilot is adapted pretty directly from the Leonard short story ""Fire in the Hole".

Premieres tonight.

I also like Olyphant, and I'm somewhat intrigued. I think this falls into the large category of shows where I'll see how the reaction to the full season pans out before I give it a shot.

This is just getting better and better. Tuesday's episode was sad. But I love the depth they put into all the characters. Even the two mob guys, they developed in the few scenes. Olyphant is just great.

It says something when you feel bad when the bad guys get shot. The scene where Raylan faces down the two mob guys...it was perfectly done. You expect to them to show Raylan draw and shoot the guy from Florida. Instead, he moves, and he gets shot. Excellent.

Everyone should be watching. I think it has been consistently excellent, and I like how they keep including Goggins in the show. Nearly every scene with him and Olyphant are excellent.

Yeah I'm really enjoying it. The past couple of episodes have done a good job of tying various continuing plot threads together. While I enjoy the standalone episodes as well, most every show needs an arc these days. Any episode with Goggins gets me a bit more excited, and I like the addition of M.C. Gainey as well.

Okay, that's enough praise for me. Downloading it now. Are there any Leonard fans around here, or are you just enjoying the show on its own merits?

I'm enjoying the show on its own merits. However, because I've enjoyed the show so much, I've ordered the three Leonard books featuring Raylan Givens (Olyphant's character). I just got the last one I need a little while ago and I can't wait to start reading them.

On its own. In fact, the show may inspire me to read my first Leonard. The used bookstore tends to have at least a few of them for cheap.

This show has been really solid so far. It seems... careful. Like, the minor characters are really well fleshed out.

I've never read any of Leonard's books, and have had mixed reactions to his movies.

But I think this is a great show.

I'm enjoying it as well. Thing is there's nothing especially special about it. It's just damn fine entertainment.

Then the show is serving a good purpose no matter what Laughing. I was introduced to Leonard through Get Shorty and Jackie Brown, and subsequently read just about every crime / thriller novel he'd written, though I've missed a couple of his recent ones. He's so good at what he does that the books feel more frivolous than they are, but they're impeccably written and great fun regardless.

Awesome casting news.

http://livefeed.hollywoodre...n-justified-.html

Quote:
Walton Goggins becomes series regular on 'Justified'
Guess Boyd Crowder is going to stick around for little while longer.

After almost killing off his character in the pilot, the producers of FX's "Justified" have elevated the terrific Walton Goggins to a series regular on the show.

"He's amazing and he's just a great guy," said showrunner Graham Yost. "There had to be charm in 'Boyd.' We knew with 'Boyd,' going in, that who we cast was critical for the success of the pilot, therefore getting it to become a series. So Goggins' casting was really instrumental. Without him, we wouldn't be on the air. "

"It just made sense on so many levels," says Goggins. "I've been a fan of executive producer Graham Yost's work, as well as Timothy Olyphant, for a long time. That coupled with an opportunity to be back with my family at FX and play in Elmore Leonard's sandbox was just too good to pass up."

"Justified" just received a pickup for a second season on the network. Goggins is repped by APA and Darris Hatch.

The last episode was very good. Stephen Root was awesome and Walton Goggins is so good. He melts every scene he appears in.

Also read "Fire in the Hole," Leonard's short story about Raylan and Boyd. Basically the same as the pilot, save a few changes the show made to turn the story into a series.

Read everyone's posts so I could see if I'd be echoing other's complaints, and it looks as if no one else has had any criticisms so far. Well, here goes:

- Olyphant inspires me to want to smash his smug face in. I can't stand the supremely confident Alpha male type who knows just how irresistable he is to the women (I find nothing more resistable) and who magically comes out of every violent encounter on top, against the odds
- why is nearly every female who makes an appearance blonde? that one woman who was a redhead was a breath of fresh air
- The first four episodes or so featured a trope that was REALLY driving me nuts but it seems to have faded out since - that of the tense moment followed by explosive gunfire that kills someone.

My favorite thing about this show? The opening credits kick ass.

Heh. I don't particularly like the credits because they sort of rip off True Blood. The song is cool, though: http://www.gangstagrass.com/

They had it on there for free for a while, I have the mp3.

As to your points:

- I don't see Givens as a smug alpha male... sure, he's pushing the cowboy image to its limits given the modern setting, but he's a total screw-up with a whole lot of issues, and he knows it. The only thing he's good at is police work and he's a damn good shot. He never actually beats the odds, when it comes to shooting people, he's the fastest and there's nothing more to it. As for irresistable - heh, I don't see it in the show at all. He's being more made fun of than anything.

- It's rural Kentucky? In my experience, one of the major pastimes for women in places like that is coloring their hair blonde, whether it suits them or not. Gypsies in these parts even color small children's hair, girls AND boys.

- I haven't noticed that at all. I did, however, notice that they had started to push their luck with "I know what you're thinking, well - it's quite the opposite". They like to not follow the formula so hard it ends up being the formula. I'm glad they're not really doing it anymore.

I have a complaint. Timothy Olyphant seems to perpetually suffer from red eye. Bothers me in every close-up.

Caught about 10 minutes if an interview with Walton Goggins on NPRs Fresh Air about a week or so ago. Haven't been able to catch the rest but thought folks might be interested in googling it.

I'm from the equivalent of rural Kentucky. a) we're not gypsies b) hair came in every color, mostly brown. Perhaps I should've said the tired former hottie looks on every female given a speaking role are pukeworthy.

Along with the same unrealism, everyone's rail thin. Yeah.. everyone was rail thin in that area in 1910, when they were starving. Now they're mostly hugely fat and some are missing teeth.

To be as crystal clear as possible, the looks of everyone cast are hugely unrealistic. It's Hollywood's ideal of what redneck racists look like. (If they really want to know, Stormfront members post pictures of themselves. They're just that smart.)
