POSTPosted: Mon Dec 04, 2006 3:02 pm    Post subject: So, I bought World of Warcraft this weekend- I have some questions Reply with quote

I bought WoW Friday night because I heard so many good things about it. Unfortunately, I have so many things I need to do this month that I probably won't even load it up until January. As it is, I'm going on vacation for a week during Christmas, so I think I can hold off. Anyway...

I know some of you play the game, and I was just wondering if I could get some pointers. I'll probably play this game by myself quite a bit because I don't have hours and hours to devote to it. If I'm soloing a lot, what is a good character type, class, etc. to keep me alive? Is it cooler to be Alliance or Horde? And I guess they have different types of environments where you can really get into character, including language, or it can be casual.

Also, if anyone would be interested, maybe we could get a group together after Christmas and kick some ass. I might only get in 10 hours a week, if that, but if anyone is up for it, it could be fun. I've never bothered with on-line gaming before, so it's all new to me.

Honestly, I'm out of the loop when it comes to video games anymore. I've had an X-box for almost 3 years, and I've played it maybe 2 dozen times. I've got at least 10 video games on my shelf that I haven't even played before. The games I like playing are the FPS's, where I can kill lots of Nazis. I think the last game I finished was either Return to Wolfenstein, or the second Call of Duty game. I have an itchy trigger finger. Very Happy

Join a guild as soon as possible. Makes stuff more fun.

Make sure you join a fairly new server, or most of the other players will outrank you by far. Also I wouldn't join a PVP server until you get better at it as constantly getting killed by other players when you're trying to finish a quest is damn annoying.

I've always preferred alliance, but that really is subjective. Hunter is a good rank to be. You can have pets that help you out and they're just plain cool. Any race will do really, but I like dwarf.

Just have fun and don't get too addicted...

Thanks! I don't think I'll have the spare time to actually get addicted, which is why I'm asking so many questions. And I did hear about players killing other players, and you're right, I can hold off on that for a while. And yes, pets would be cool!

Since you're new to mmorpgs I suggest something simple, a warrior of any race for instance. You'll more easily level, cool position in party (Tank), the best armor, and the easiest ability function.

Great advice! I assume a Tank is someone who gets out in front of everyone so they can drop spells from the back, giving them some protection. Any other lingo I should know before starting?

Interesting sidenote: I used to play D & D back in the day (mid-80's, when I was in junior high). I was the Dungeon Master, partly because I liked running the show, partly because I could tell a good story and keep the action moving, and partly because I had enough of an Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder to keep everything organized. I'm kind of detail oriented. Smile I think that's why this interests me so much, reliving my youth and all.

Join a regular server if you don't want to roleplay or PvP.

A lot of people enjoy Horde more, though I'm primarily an Alliance player myself. Feel free to start a character on Shadow Council if you ever want to play. Smile

The warrior is a good solo class, really great survivability. I'd say the best soloing class overall is probably the hunter, although you have the extra work of maintaining your pet (not a big deal, but it is more complicated than just being a warrior).

Elite and Dungeon quests require a group to succeed... I didn't actually know Elite quests were much harder than regular quests when I started, so I always like to pass on that bit of noob advice. Heh.

Umm... don't vendor your greens. Smile

Some more random tips, which may or may not be obvious, depending:

Quests pay off much more than just grinding monsters, so take and complete as many quests as you can.

Always log out in an inn or capital city, the rest bonus will make it much easier to level up.

Don't join the first guild who asks. So many guilds suck, or are dissolved after a few months or weeks of play. Get a feel for the server, and the players on it, before joining a guild (your mileage may vary; I've had a lot of negative guild experiences).

If you're a warrior, Mining and Blacksmithing are great professions. Mining overall is just a cash cow, but being able to make your own armor and weapons rocks.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I've thought about getting this too. I played EQ & EQ2 back in the day, but eventually had to quit all of them because they were far too time consuming in order to do much beyond max level. I understand WoW is a lot more casual (is it?).

Anyway, if I do, it'll probably also be around January before I have the time to sink. Let me know what server you choose and maybe I'll see you in game.

Never played WoW, but I was a hard core EQ player back in the day. I always found casters much more fun than tanks.

It totally depends on your personality. My first character was a mage, and I really like mages a lot, but had a hard time soloing when I first started.

My main character right now is a priest, and I love it. Vampiric Embrace is awesome.

It's still not as good as D&D.

If I didn't spend half my time chasing broads and watching sports, I'd be offended by that. Very Happy I had actually thought about doing some old school D & D again, but I don't think I could find anyone I know in my area that either have the time or inclination to play. And I don't want to join a local group, because then I'd be hanging out with a bunch of geeks. Razz

Great advice from everyone. Aram's in the Shadow Council, and dissent is maybe up for some future gaming. Sweet. If anyone else is interested, let me know.

Another question: you can have more than one character, correct? I heard you could have up to 10. Maybe I'll make a few, and kill off the ones that blow, and keep the ones that have mad skillz. Also, it's like $15/month to keep playing, right? That's another reason I don't want to load everything up right away. I'd just be wasting my free month of gaming that came with the purchase.

Yes, you can have up to ten. You don't need to delete them unless you run out of slots and want more (or you could just play on another server, giving you another 10 empty character slots). And yeah, it's $15 a month, or slightly less if you pay by the year.

That's how you end up with so many level 60s who have no idea how to play.

One time, when I was around thirteen, my cousin was playing Everquest. I tried out playing as a dwarf for a few hours and almost bought the game. Until my parents said, "Wait, you're going to buy a video game that you have to pay to play? Nope."

I really love my parents.

Find the AH in the main area immediately. Items are ranked by the color of name (grey=sucks, white=okay, green=good, blue=rare, purple=epic.) Always check the AH, get the AH mod, so you can scan the AH and know what price to charge. If you get a green or better armor/weapon sell it. If something says binds when equiped if you equip it you can't put it in the AH.

Back in the day, I was a hardcore Waterdeep/Asheron's Call / Waterdeep (again) / RO gamer (in that order). I stopped playing MUDs / MMOs a little before I came to Icine. My brother made the leap to WOW a couple years ago. He was pretty satisfied with the world. I think you'll enjoy it. Smile

*checks out entry for "WoW Terminolgy" on Wikipedia... AH...*
Auction House! Yes, I'm going to try and get as much loot as possible. I want to be a badass!

I think I'll read that terminology entry so I don't look like a total noob when I start. Some of it I can figure out pretty much by myself, but others, forget it.

And thanks, Lilawyn! I sure I hope it's fun. I've been getting some pretty good advice and tips from everyone, and I'm positive that will help.

Psht, mods are for wimps! Big Wink

Just kidding. I use CTMod, which is pretty handy in places, but I'd get used to the vanilla interface before you start installing a lot of third-party stuff.

Yeah, the auction house is a great place to sell rare items (greens, blues, the occasional purple), but I would try to get your loot via questing rather than buying it. You'll want to save up for your mount at level 40, after all.

In terms of selling loot... grays can just be sold to vendors (innkeepers etc.) White items, in my experience, generally can too. Greens and up should be sold at the auction house.

Well I'm currently a 43 Palladin, so I got a free mount. As for the mod issues in the newest update most are being erased. Other tips get your job immediately, blacksmithing and mining, its easy to gain levels quicker that way and you'll get much better armor. Thats if you choose those two but getting started early is important. Also get in a guild, you can always quit later.

Damn pallies and their free mounts... you don't know the pain of trying to scare up 100 gold at level 40! Big Wink

I have a 60 hunter, I've pretty much decided I'm never going to go for her epic mount. The speed boost would be nice, but 900 gold? I doubt it.

I was sort of thinking of a Shaman myself. I think I'll just have to read that little book that came with the game, and see what looks cool.

Shaman are Horde-only, at least until the expansion comes out.
