EDIT: While I'm being neat and complete, here are links to check the Voting Thread and the Results Thread for the WINGS BANNER round.

I'm excited about this round and hope we get lots of participation. I'd like to get so many entries we have to set up brackets to vote on them!!

As you can see from my avatar, I will be able to tie the WINGS idea back to Supernatural (which was my main requirement for settling on a theme Wink). But, I wanted to make it broad enough we could hope to inspire the gamers to swoop in with screen caps of dragons or planes or something. Pretty much anything goes.

So what are you into? California Anaheim Los Angeles Angels? Birds? Fairies? Military insignia? Radio Flyer wagons? Post-Beatles Paul McCartney? I haven't figured out yet the best way for Amber to tie this back to The Wire, but if we put our heads together, I bet we can do it. Smile (Hmm... maybe if she focuses on Bunny Colvin?)

Any genre will work for this round... Movies, tv, sports, games, music, photography, etc.

Do use this thread to ask questions. It's been a long time since I hosted one of these and I feel rusty. Also, it would be great to throw around ideas to get the ball rolling. I can think of some past banners that would work thematically (Wings of Desire) and I hope someone will want to rework an old idea.

:::: SO ::::

Do include WINGS in the banner. They can be the focus or not, but we should be able to find them. If you can't get actual wings, I will accept FLYING (ET's bike silhouette will work) but NOT 'falling' (Hans Gruber at the end of Die Hard won't work).

940 x 200

Make a real effort to get icine or icine.org on there somewhere.

Submit your banners to me by PM for an anonymous voting round.

Submit up to three or your best banners. If you have more ideas beyond that, post 'em here.

Deadline a week from tomorrow. So, let's say the end of Sunday June 14, 2009. (I'm in the Central timezone if that matters much to anyone.) You'll have a pretty voting thread on Monday June 15th!

You do NOT need to be an old-time iciner to participate. In fact, I'm looking forward to some new sensibilities becoming part of the mix!

Say Robin (or anyone), do you know how I can alter an image's size from something like 450X200 up to 900X200? I'm on photobucket and the tools they have there aren't helping at all (maybe try another image site?). Also doesn't help that I'm technologically challenged. Sad

Am exited, this is my first banner contest! Very Happy

It can be done, but strongly recommended against, as it'll pixellate your image to death and high-quality original starting images are the ideal.

One thing you can do is put your smaller image into a collage with other images to create a banner, but if you're just starting out, that'll prolly be beyond your abilities (just for now Flower) Best to look for large or extra-large images using Google Images or whatever image banks you have at your disposal.

I've made a ton of banners just using ACDSee's editor, which free trialware are available at OldVersion.com.

Rob: I've always used wallpaper websites, because then you get a good sized starting image. Smile

You go ahead and play with the idea to your heart's content, Fuin. Smile Post your "rejects" here if you like once you've settled on your final entries.

So, the early bird (ha!) prize goes to Katrina.

Hey, the rest of you slackers! What are you waiting for? Wink

Okay - I'm scavenging through old threads for ideas that would fit the theme. (If someone wants me (or a mod) to edit out any of the images I've pulled from old threads, just let me know.)

This version is too small, but Rico's Flight Club penguin DOES have wings.

So do the penguins in Metamorphosis Icine by Quite-Gone Genie

Oh! Back from the old, old days... Here's jennigirl's Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. (I wonder how that movie would play now if I rewatched it? I haven't thought of it in ages...)

Here is Hey Mickey!'s Flyboys banner.

lols Nina's sig banner! (It would be fun to catch up on her and her family.)

Does the Enterprise have "wings"? If Fentablar reworks it for size, I'd say yes. Wouldn't you?

That's a taste -- I'm saving more threads to check tomorrow. Smile

Thanks Jenni! Smile I was desperately trying last evening to find larger images of what I had, because I love those images so much and thought they'd be perfect. Can't, so I'm just going to scour around wallpapers now.

I'm almost tempted to just take a large 900X200 image, make it black on paint, and use that as a frame or border to put one've the pics I love over it. (hope that's not cheating)

Rob - Jenni is right; frames and borders are entirely acceptable.

You know about the image filter on google to screen out the smaller size images, don't you? I only mention it because I had to have it pointed out to me before I "found" it. It saves a lot of frustration to not even have to scroll by the ones that won't work.

I'm making an excuse to bump the thread. Should I be worried that I still only have entries from ONE person? It's been two days - only six days left....

<-- Katiescarlet's

<-- BetterDayz

<-- do feathers count? (this was by me, so, um, yes! Wink)

Even OLDER (no size?) requirements.... Eek

<-- by Pat (of the Swoopin' variety, I presume Wink)

<-- Rico's

<-- Arms held like wings won't count, but Amber's banner is still good for a smile. Very Happy

Eek What will it say if more 'newbs' participate in this round than veterans?

I had a question about image format and thought others might be interested in the answer. The answer is YES. Oh, the question? Very Happy Will PNG files work as well as JPGs?

This message has been brought by an old banner that works for theme but not for size.

<-- Quangtran's (Go eagles!)

Smile Do you have a preference? Actually, you are currently unclassified and in limbo. Eek (When I sort at the end, if the newbs need you to "beat" the old-timers, I'll slide you to their side.)

What would be ideal, I think, would be to get enough participation to warrant two voting threads. I'd set up one for newbs and one for the vets. We are NOWHERE close to that happening though. Yet?

Hmmm.... I still haven't come across a couple I'm specifically looking for but am posting these as an excuse to bump the thread. THREE more days, people!

^ RockinTim (hee!)

^ the Kagan formerly known as Aram

^ Fentablar

^ Geneve - no wings showing, but come on! It's a penguin!

I had to come bump the thread because I am thrilled with a couple of unexpected submissions I received!!! Penguin Currently, we are guaranteed quality for the round Penguin 2, but I'm still a bit concerned about quantity. Penguins

There are still 48 hours for people to contribute, and I'm looking for more.

In the spirit of icine approval and inspiration, here are more (winged!) PENGUIN banners I came across.

<-- grizzly (Where has he been? This really should be reworked for the new dimensions.)

<-- evereven

<-- evereven

<-- evereven

<-- evereven (not penguins, but definitely awesome)

About 36 hours left, banner-makers!!!

Hug Hug Hug

I wish the little "spotlight" icon on the thread list would turn off and on to show new posts. I often am late to notice activity in the pinned threads because I depend on that indicator on the rest of the index pages. If I'd noticed sooner, I would have come thrown some Hugs your way before this. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you create, Mis! (And I hope I'm not seeing Mobs posting because he's swamped with pictionary AND banner making.)

Eärendil The Mariner wrote:

I really like what Goggles did here a lot too and agree it would suit icine ! She's clever and absolutely talented about including the text. Goggles, is that all original or was there a starting image from somewhere? I wonder if it would be tricky to make it in a color range that would work a bit better (coordinating or contrasting) with the icine grey? (Embarassed if that shows off how unsophisticated my eye is.)

I FOUND IT!!! Finally! The banner I've been looking for for days!

^ I've been searching and searching for this one. It's what got me curious about the movie Wings of Desire, and now I consider that film a personal favorite. And that, as far as I'm concerned, is a great side benefit of these banner rounds. Thanks, Acapelli!!!

More goodies from the vault!

^ tycho (still makes me smile! Smile)

^ jennigirl (there's no way to go wrong with penguins, is there? Penguin 2)

^ eternity (I think I counted four winged blocks?)

^ JRSly (Heart the text inclusion!)

I think Goggles' yellowish banner goes rather well with the blues on icine, although it could easily be changed.

I'm reporting another submission. Thumbs Up You will get to see it along with the rest in just over 24 hours! That's plenty of time for more of you to decide to participate....

In the meantime, I'm indulging myself by posting a couple I've been playing with but have decided to give up on. I got frustrated cropping and recropping trying to show off all the wings in this fabulous season three motel room (from Supernatural in case you had any doubt Very Happy). And then I ran into font issues - there didn't seem to be a font I was happy with.Thumbs Down Oh, well. If I could I'd get rid of the characters too since my point is to showcase what the set designers do regularly on this series. (It amounts to a road trip and every week there's some new location to anticipate.)

k. I turned in my three.

Ideas I had and was unable to use:

- the winged costume from Ever After

- An old yellowy shot of the original biplanes - such as the shot from my favorite commercial ever (searched for a long time to find a high-quality video to download and screenshot, couldn't)

- in that vein, The Red Baron

- something from Wings (1927)

- Sky Captain

- Victoria's Secret Angels Sidelong
