Stxy: Return to Paradise (1996)
Overview: If you're a Styx fan you will love this DVD. The band (minus Chuck Panozzo, the drummer, who died just prior to this 1996 tour) is very tight, and they obviously enjoy their Chicago reunion. Their newdrummer, Todd Sucherman, fits, and really adds to the energy. Most of Styx's major hits are here (Rockin' The Paradise, Blue Collar Man, Lady, Too Much Time On My Hands, Snowblind, Suite Madame Blue, Crystal Ball, Grand Illusion, Fooling Yourself, Show Me The Way, Boat On The River, Lorelei, Babe, Miss America, Come Sail Away, Renegade, and The Best of Times), with one glaring omission from my standpoint - Mr. Roboto. Most of the songs were very well done, with Come Sail Away being truly awesome.
Overview: Styx as usual puts on a great show. The most amazing thing here is how dead on their singing was, considering this is their last stop on the tour you would expect their voices to be fried, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Both Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung are in top form. John Panozzo, the bassist, is far more active and engaged then I ever remember in the shows I saw.Additionally, the camera work is solid. The close-ups of the intruments are good, the pan-shots of the band work, and the lighting really emphasizes the performance. There could be a few less gratuitous crowd shots though.
The Bad: The only problem with the sound concerned the volume on James Young's leads. His leads are mixed far too quietly for my comfort (his feed is dramatically lower than Shaws in volume). This was especially bothersome, as one of the greatest things about Styx involve the contrasting guitar styles of James Young and Tommy Shaw. Additionally, while James Young's leads absolutely rocked, a few of Tommy's do not fit as well as they could have (although his acoustic work was awesome!). His early leads are great, but there are a few not-so-great ones later.
The Wierd:Also, Dennis DeYoung's black hair color is somewhat strange. Please Dennis, forget the coloring and go back to the salt-n-pepper look.
These are minor quibbles though. Their voices are all terrific, and the performance is wonderful. If you have ever seen their live performances, you know this is where Styx truly shines. This DVD reminds us how great they really were.
Score: 8/10

Rammstein: Live aus Berlin (1988)
Produced by Eric Silver, Directed by Jonathan Demme
Overview: German's Industrial Metal band Rammstein puts on one of the most phenomenal shows on DVD. Atmosphere and other-worldly cyberpunk-like embiance are in abundant supply. Virtually every song has actual fire shooting out from the most unlikely places. On top of this, the band really RAWKS.
Visuals: The stage for Rammstein oozes with futuristic dystopia. Invasive metal is the order of the day. The outfits Rammstein starts the performance out with fit perfectly. But throughout, it becomes clear that most every aspect of this performance has been wonderfully choreographed. Truly, Rammstein is putting on a show - and what a wonderful show it is!
More impressive though is that the MTV style camera work actually works wonderfully to add to the atmosphere. Usually when you get this style of camera work, you feel more like you're in a music video. While this feeling comes through at first, the constant and suppremely interactive crowd, which sings right along with the band, brings you into the concert. The overall feeling is both immersive and edgy. Often, the lead singer points the Mic at the crowd, and EVERYTIME they are screaming back the exact lyrics, perfectly in time with the song.
The Band: Rammstein's music is crunchy and repetitive metal. Most of the songs are driven by the drum player. The keyboardist is bizarre in the extreme, but then again, he fits right in. The guitarists have pale blue contact lenses, and pretty much everyone, from the ultra-muscular Till Lindeman to the cyberpunk bassist really emphasizes performance as much as the music.
The Sound: The quality of the sound track is superb, but is not really surround-sound in the sense that say, the Eagles Hotel California is. You get mostly crown noises behind, and band in front. But again, the quality is terrific. The band is completely tight throughout.
The Highlight: I first heard of Rammstein on the Matrix Soundtrack. Song #12, Du Hast, really hit me. While I couldn't understand a word (as its all in German), I was blown away. In this concert, Rammstein REALLY comes hard on Du Hast. The whole thing is just magical. There's a part where Lindeman completely stops singing (during the slow "Du Hast...Du Hast Mesh" part) adn the crowd does the entire thing PERFECTLY. Truly it was magical
The Bottom Line: I have somewhere between 50-70 concert DVDs and Rammstein's Live aus Berlin performance is like nothing I've ever seen. This truly is an experience not to be missed.
Score: 10/10

Are there any new folks here who watch Concert DVDs? I had kept up with this, but previously, I was the only one here who ever watched these things.

I'm more into music documentaries (same thing? sorta?), but the most recent concert DVD I've seen was the Galaxie 500 special set thingy. I have the Ted Leo DVD near the top of my Netflix, which might get bumped up since I'm going to see him next Sunday.

I'm pushing somewhere between 50-70 concert DVDs. I have some documentaries (Last Waltz, Gimme Shelter, Isle of Wight, Monterey Pop Festival), but the vast majority are actual performances.

Nice! Last Waltz and Gimme Shelter are among my favorites. Monterey Pop is amazing too. You have the Criterion?
Got a full list, like DVD aficianado or anything?

I wasn't aware there was another version. I do have one complaint about the criterion though. Here we have what turns out to be Janis Joplin's coming out party, and instead of filling the disc with her whole performance we get that gawd-aweful segment of Tiny Tim playing in the dingy dark bar.
Aside from that though, the set is just perfect. The performances are extraordinary, as are most of the commentaries. Also, if you like Gimme Shelter, you should really give Isle of Wight a try. This really captures the collapse of the peace and love movement as well as anything.
EDIT: As for the list, no, I probably should do this with some of my specialty DVDs, but I just have way too many in total to even think about doing something like that. I was planning to review them all here though.

Thanks for the rec on Isle of Wight. I added that to my Netflix queue. Didn't realize it was Murray Lerner. I enjoyed his folk fest stuff they showed on the Bob Dylan doc, and I hear they're releasing (or released?) a DVD for it. Did you see the Dylan doc by chance?

Yes, I really liked the Dylan documentary. That was just a few weeks ago, right? Definitely well done.

Thanks! I really need to get back to these. I have a pretty massive stack waiting to be reviewed.
