OK, so it is. Thought I'd take up rkm's suggestion of starting a new thread. So I'm starting the show from the beginning, and I guess anyone else that is thinking of doing the same can join in. I figure there are a legion of fans here that would be willing to discuss old seasons anyway. Thoughts so far (SPOILERS):

-The pilot was fantastic. A gripping opening scene that immediately establishes the tone for the series, and some really good special effects to boot. I didn't see the ending coming either, which made it all the more effective. Poor Sam.

-The third episode with Amy Acker guest starring was really good. Liked the whole "in another life" angle the story had with Dean and his relationship with the kid.

-As I said in the other thread, Sam is a bit too emo for me at the moment, although it's understandable. Dean is just a lot more amiable and seems to have all the good lines.

More thoughts as I go.

You won't get sucked into the show immediately, the monster of the week format does get repetitive at times (at least it did for me) but once the arc comes into play it becomes more compelling.

I just finished season 2, and I think the second season really built up the quality of the show. There was more of a meta-story, and I think Sam's acting improved. (He's not great, kids.)

I think I will do a rewatch of Season 1 as well. I miss the Naïveté of the boys, especially Sammy.

Episode 1x4: Phantom Traveler

Unfortunately for this show, the whole "monster/evil spirit/snakes on a plane" thing has been done to death, along with "smoke" monsters, so I didn't find this to be a really compelling episode in terms of that stuff. I did enjoy the brother interactions and how they are building back up their relationship. Dean's fear of flying was funny just because you haven't really seen him show an outward fear of anything yet on the show. The Homeland Security suits were pretty sweet. A passable episode. C

You also have to remember that the show started in 2005 so these episodes are almost 4 years old, before Snakes on a Plane.

Keep watching it does get better toward the end of Season 1.

The two episodes that totally rocked my world in season 2 were:

1. "Hollywood Babylon", for being hilarious and subverting their own reality.

2. "What Is and What Should Never Be", for being genuinely affecting and heart-breaking.

And, thus far the funniest moment in the whole series is:

Spoiler:

In "Tall Tales" when the frat boy slow-dances with the alien.

Episode 1x5: Bloody Mary

The take on the Bloody Mary myth was pretty cool, and the Ring-like visuals were effectively creepy even if they were a straight rip for the most part, but that story kind of died out by the end. That's the problem I've had with the monster of the weeks so far: they are intriguing at the start and then become a real non-factor for me by the end of each episode. That being said, some really good development with the brothers, especially the fact that Sam had visions about his girlfriend dying. Dean's Paris Hilton comment kind of bothered me at first because with all the running around killing demons and spirts, where would they find the time to be caught up on pop culture? Although I guess they spend a lot of time in motels and we don't follow their every waking second, so I guess it's not a big deal. The show has moments of brilliance and clearly the main story has a lot of promise, but so far the majority of the episodes haven't been really good from start to finish. But it's still early, and even though the growing pains are there, it's still entertaining me quite a bit thus far. C+

Highlight: Sam forgiving himself at the end and seeing the vision of his girlfriend was a nice way to end the episode, and probably the first time I've cared for his character so far.

You're a pretty tough grader, Rick! That's okay, though. The only one of these that might sneak into my top ten overall is the pilot because it really holds up as a perfect introduction to this family. Easy, Tiger! Of the rest, I'd agree that Bloody Mary is the strongest. I Heart that ending of seeing Jessica on the street.

Born Under a Bad Sign really shows that off. He gets better yet in S3 and S4. And even in the clip you included I thought he did a great job of

1x6: Skin

Best episode yet (pilot excluded). I loved the whole Manhunter homage at the beginning, and it immediately got me hooked. The shapeshifting stuff was really well done too, especially the actual transformation scene which was a lot more gruesome than I thought it would be. The episode hits on a few things, one of them being Sam's absence from Stanford, which was something I wondered about since he just upped and left. The other thing was some of the subconscious resentment between the brothers, which while hinted at, was nice to see come to the surface...even if it wasn't really "Dean." The fight between the two was also filmed well (I guess Daddy Winchester taught the boys karate). Now Dean has a rap sheet, which was another thing I was very pleased with, in that the two of them go around to these towns impersonating law officials and the like, it's only a matter of time before something like this happens. I get a feeling this will be important later on, as well as the ominous, "How many chances am I going have to see my own funeral?" That right there screams some sort of foreshadowing to me, it'll be interesting to see if that's true. All in all, I really enjoyed this episode. B+

Highlight: Definitely the fight. very well choreographed and I was waiting to see when the two would throw down...they are brothers after all. Very Happy

Impala I always like when Skin clicks for a new viewer. I think it's a good sign overall. I was so disoriented by that opening scene (great music choice too) that I don't think I relaxed the whole rest of the ep. Now I'm really anxious for you to get a couple more specific episodes.

Thank you for taking the time to write up your impressions, Rick. I grin every time I see you've posted here. And let me know when it appropriate to start grilling you about your background. Your last comment made me guess you have at least one brother. Are you older or younger?

Thanks for reading! I hadn't originally planned to make it a journal type thread, but I thought it might be more fun that way. Also, grill away. Very Happy

I have a younger brother, and he's definitely the "Sam" out of the two of us...genius of the family and all that, while I fall more in line with the older brother who caused the parents a headache. We have a pretty good relationship though, and haven't physically fought or got into a really bad argument in a while now that I think about it, but we used to tussle all the time when we were younger.

1x7: Hook Man

Wow...that was atrocious. I like when horror homages/tributes are done well (and it has been done well on a few occasions thus far) but this episode was just plain bad. The Hook Man story felt flat and not at all compelling, and there was just some really terrible dialogue and exchanges between the brothers ("If we get the hook, we can beat Hook...Man!") Dean came off as overly douchey in this one with his multiple comments about sorority girls. There just wasn't anything at all in this episode that I found even mildly interesting. On top of that, when Sam and Dean get taken in temporarily by the cops, how in the hell didn't his APB from the previous episode come up?! He's a known (and "dead") fugitive of the law. Simple continuity errors like that really annoy me, especially when it happens an episode after said continuity was established. Really disappointing episode, especially on the heels of "Skin." F

Highlight: The one moment I did chuckle at was when the cop was about to give Dean the "get the hell out of my town" speech when he abruptly cuts him off and says their leaving. They're probably so used to hearing those speeches from sheriffs and whatnot that it's probably a trained response now.

Hookman is one of those eps where I think you can look back and question whether groundwork was being laid for at least one of the arc questions that S4 revolves around. Amber says that layering meaning on later doesn't make a bad episode good, but I love that you can see that happening in this show. I'll watch this ep a little differently now.

S4 theme applied to this ep....
Spoiler:

What makes a monster? How monstrous is Laurie for 'judging' the morals of others and unwittingly point a loaded weapon - the Hookman - at those she finds immoral?

I usually advise people not to slow down and think too much about Hookman and Bugs. Try to time your viewing so that you can move onto the next (good!) stuff instead of stewing over these couple.

Although, now I'm remembering some more good from Hookman. I really did like the hook dragging along and carving up the walls. And!!!! This is the ep with the double toss between Sam and Dean, isn't it? Weapon for necklace? OK, I went to look. There's also boys in the library which is usually a good thing in my book. Is this the ep where Dean is Matlock? Laughing edit: And there's nothing not to like about Dean standing over the grave and lighting it up! Wink

1x8: Bugs

Really? Bugs?! Another poor episode, but I guess I was prepared for it from what you guys have been saying. The bug attacks were boring, and the ending was horribly written (they go into the house in pitch black darkness, and 5 minutes later its sunny out??). However, I did like the Winchester family stuff, and how we got to know a little bit about what happened between Sam and their dad. I also liked Dean's role as playing the middleman between the two, as he leaned somewhat towards his dad's side, but still could see where Sam was coming from. These parts of the episode were the only thing that stopped it from being another failure. C-

Highlight: I liked the bit when Sam was talking about how his dad got angry at him for choosing soccer over bow hunting, and Dean gives the deadpan retort, "Bow hunting is an important skill." lols

What you noticed about the timeline is called "insta-dawn." HAHAHA I have a soft spot for this episode despite its faults - which we laughed about when Amber watched. Yes, the look into Sam's and Dean's perspectives about their family saves the ep.

Nice post! I did like that wide shot, really great looking. The other thing I like about the show so far is how they explain the boys' expenses. We don't really get an inside look (as of now at least) as to how exactly they pull off the scams, but at least there's a plausible reason as to why they're just able to kill evil spirits and whatnot all day. I love that aspect of it...it's just them and the Impala; they have no super secret headquarter to go back to or expensive resources. Adds a good deal of grittiness to the story.

I still could I suppose. I did already watch the first five eps when you loaned S-1 to me last fall.

Question: Will the CW/UPN/whatever rerun the entire fourth season before S-5 begins later this year or in 2010?
