Rico - you're back at it! I love every episode on disc 3.
You know, it's fascinating to me to watch other people watch the show. There really does seem to be something for everyone, so to speak. You had a strong reaction to Asylum and Amber didn't if I remember right; she liked Scarecrow a lot while you're more meh about it. Miscreation seems most strongly drawn to the big mytharc elements and Flea likes the fun brother stuff.... (I'm simplifying egregiously, and none of that says the less favored elements don't work for each of you.)
But you all must see the advantage I have since every part of the show seems to click for me and push just the right buttons.
Rico also seems to dislike it when the boys split up cause "bad stuff happens". As Primo said in the LOST thread, bring on the bad stuff!! It makes for the highest drama and greatest tension when those moments occur. Not to mention the most satisfying reunions. (well, not most satisfying since there's no hugs!! )
It is not because “bad things happen,” I just find it so cliché and lazy writing. Plus, the best thing about the show is the chemistry of the brothers. Splitting them up takes that element away.
Also, it kinda bothers me that they come off so brave. I would like to see them get a little bit more scared in the situations they get themselves in. If I’m in a haunted house, I would not be saying, “Hey lets split up.” I would be holding onto someone’s arm. I know they have been dealing with this stuff all their lives, but they just come off so reckless.
Saw it a few days ago, so it is not so fresh in my mind anymore. But I remember liking Sam’s little speech about, “We see unexplainable evil things all the time, why is it so hard to imagine unexplainable good things?” (Not exact quote, but you get the drift.)
Dean’s resistance of religion reminded me of Mal in Firefly.
When the spell was broken on the reaper and he showed up to kill that lady, he gave a little evil smirk. That was the best part of the episode.

I watched "Faith" last night thinking you had to be getting to it. (I was being patient while you pulled together your 80s consensus posting. Nice work on that!) I'd have a struggle keeping this episode off of any Best list. It's not flashy, but boy, do I love it.
Spoiler:
And - oh, my! Rico!! I can't tell you how much I love the thought you had comparing Dean's reluctance with religion to Mal's! Mal is one of the characters I see Dean being a young edition of, and you just strengthened my belief that Dean will one day save the universe. (That makes Sam River, doesn't it?!) Seriously, I absolutely love that there are still new things to see and make connections about with this show. You are awesome!
So, I tried to figure out why I like this ep sooo much more than anyone else -- more every time I watch it, in fact.
For sure, there's the whole maternal thing at seeing Dean that hurt. For heaven's sake, he's wearing a hoodie and his bangs are laying down!
Then, there's Sam who is entirely sweet in mother hen mode hovering over his brother. It's his turn to leave the message for dad this time and I like that he plays it less freaked out than Dean was in "Home." I haven't decided if that's because he distrusts (doesn't need?) John that much or if he really does believe he can handle the situation (because as much as we, the audience, know we can't lose Dean, so must the little brother have that kind of faith).
I'm so impressed with them both for figuring out what was going on. I know I wouldn't have been able to look the gift horse in the mouth. I hate that Dean feels wrong at having been healed. I'm pretty sure that both Sam and I could rationalize that sure the reaper was going to take someone -- that doesn't mean is has to be DEAN! Sam isn't all the way there yet, but he tries that line of thought on for size anyway.
I think the use of "Don't Fear the Reaper" was one of the best music cues the show has done. It really tells the story and sets the mood as the jogger is chased through the woods.
Then there's all the moral questions that get asked. What if Sue Ann had been controlling the reaper so that he took actual bad guys (I nominate the skeevy bastard.) instead of liberal activists? I know, I know, the objection is to seizing the power to play God. Still....
Oh! EDIT!!
Spoiler:
I had to come edit in a mention of one of my favorite parts of the episode! It's when Dean goes to visit with the reverend after being healed.
DEAN: Why? Why me? Out of all the sick people, why save me?
ROY: Well, like I said before, the Lord guides me. I looked into your heart, and you just stood out from all the rest.
DEAN: What did you see in my heart?
ROY: A young man with an important purpose. A job to do. And it isn’t finished. (DEAN looks slightly surprised.)
That exchange has shaped my feelings about Dean.
Connecting to the series through 3.12 Jus in Bello
Spoiler:
- The trade-offs going on here are the seeds for the deal-making both John and Dean indulge in!! Sue Ann gains control over the reaper out of desperation to save her terminal husband.
This ep is also our intro to reapers -- seen again in "In my Time of Dying." This guy was so season one creepy with no lines and remaining entirely impassive until that smirk upon his release that Rico noted.
It's really a very sad episode and the implications go on and on. What if John or Dean had caught this tiger as a way to save the one they loved? More and more the boys are faced with decisions that amount to choosing who will live and die.
edit: For all that this comes across as a stand alone ep on first viewing, I see it as is extremely important to the overall series.

Dean is definitely an Alpha Male with a tortured soul. There is a long line of characters I could compare him too. Mal, Han Solo, Sawyer, Tyler Durden, and I think deep down there is possibly a hint of Jack Bauer.
Sam is a littler harder to pin down than Dean. He is not an Alpha Male, he doesn’t lack confidence but it is not on the same level that Dean has. Sill, he is more likely to rebel against something and do his own thing. He is intuitive for sure. I wouldn’t say he is smarter than Dean, but he is book smart. Interesting you compared him to River since they both seem to be “special.” I would lean more towards Indiana Jones. But I’ll need to watch more episodes to get a full assessment of him.
This episode was pretty bad. Man, I don't even want to talk about it.
Nightmare
Spoiler:
Wooohooo!!! Was this an awesome episode or what? You know, I liked the show before. But I can tell you the exact moment I fell in love with it. When Sam sees Dean get shot and pushes that cabinet thingy with his mind. Wow! I was hoping he would bust out his new power on the kid and toss him around. But I guess I have to wait until he fine tunes his powers.
It makes me wonder how many more people are out there with the same power. I wonder if Sam will get even more powers like flying! I wonder if these were powers are given by creature that took their mom, or did the creature just seek them out because they already had the powers. So many questions! *head explodes*

Ok, done. I can think of 3 things to enjoy in the episode, but they don't amount to enough to save the ep, imo. If this is the last time I ever watch Route 666, I'll be ok with that.
Spoiler:
-- Sam gets to play classic little brother -- pestering Dean to find out what he had going on with Cassie. You can see Sam creating new mental Dean files he's never thought of before. a) Dean was serious about a girl and b) a girl dumped Dean (Dean pulling out and slipping on the shades to end the ep when Sam was inviting more caring and sharing was just right, I thought.)
-- The boys get to set stuff on fire!
-- The Impala gets to chase around with Dean and throw a 180 to save his life (with an assist from Sam).

Ha! I love that you can find the good in even the worst of episodes.
Solid episode. While it didn’t deal with anything supernatural, it still didn’t disappoint. I like how they kept on saying, “it is just people.”
I don’t know what’s worse. That Dean likes Godzilla movies, or that Sam likes the remake.
I found myself yelling at the screen a lot with this episode. (I never do that with any other show) When Dean was caught by the little girl in the house I was yelling, “Don’t trust her Dean, don’t trust her!” She was really good in this episode. I love the look on Deans face when they put her to guard him at the end and she holds a little knife in front of his face.
When that hillbilly was talking about hunting people and how it is the best game, I wanted Dean to tell him he hunts monsters.
Shadow
Spoiler:
Another solid episode. Those shadow creatures were scary.
That one girl. Meg? I love her. Great character. I was mad when I thought they killed her off. She has a great evil smirk.
When those things grabbed their dad, I totally jumped.
I like Dean making fun of Sam for his "Girlfriend" I also like how Sam was caught looking up into her room.

Well, it's not hard to find things to like in this ep, is it?
Spoiler:
This ep has one of the classic examples of Dean saying all the right big brother things (It'll be all right. You'll be fine.... We'll figure it out.... This doesn't freak me out.) while Ackles lets us see that well, yes, Dean is, in fact, kinda freaked out. If you just listen without watching, it's possible to believe his words.
Did you see what was going on in this screencap?
It's the best I could find of the boys after Uncle Roger is killed and they are leaving. They're talking about the case and about to cross the street. Dean puts his hand out to stop Sam as a car drives by. They keep talking without missing a beat and it comes across as an unconscious quasi-parental move that they've played out a thousand times. Totally love that.
Also, I love Dean stepping in front of the stepmom when Max threatens her. It's a beautiful thing when he's serious about the 'saving people' part of their mission. I'm not really able to suspend my sense of reality and buy floating knives and guns like I can to believe in ghosts or reapers, etc. But I was sure jerked back into the story when Dean was SHOT! Do we believe Dean was ready to kill Max, a human?
You're right, Rico, that the world just expanded with the introduction of Max. I'll be watching to see how you like where the story takes that.
We get a cracked out hunting lodge motel room in Saginaw, Michigan! Moose antlers, deer and boar heads, and stuffed fish mounted on the log walls accompanied by birch tree trunks and an autumn woods mural adorn the room. (All of which go unnoticed by the boys. )
It's hard to beat arsenal maintenance! They try by giving us supernatural scanning meters, Dean getting to kick through a gate, and priest impersonations (Fathers Simmons and Frehley ), but I think this is what actually does it: Long as I'm around, nothing bad is going to happen to you.
I love that Sam acknowledges that their dad could have been truly awful.
Discussion connecting to later eps in the series. (I've seen through 3.12 Jus In Bello.)
Spoiler:
Oooo, I had strong 2.12 Nightshifter flashes as Sam was trying to talk Max into giving up. It was a near mirror of Dean trying to get Ron to calm down and give up his bank hostage plan for catching the Mandroid. I think both brothers say something very like, "You're in charge here."
My first point above about Ackles letting us see something his words aren't saying also comes through strongly in 3.04 Sin City during his basement chat with Casey.
Dean stopping Sam from getting run over is flipped in 3.11 Mystery Spot when Sam physically pulls Dean back from the oncoming car. Now I want to rewatch Mystery Spot because it's a new connection for me. Sam had already SEEN Dean die in Nightmare, and I wonder if there's any hint of that in MS!

Okay, there were some spoilers back there, but I skipped over them to post my own thoughts.
I'll just say that the comments that Rico had on the first disc, I echo completely.
The Pilot was as haunting as hell, great stuff.
Spoiler:
Poor Jessica and Mom! That was spooky. The death of those two was amazingly horrific. And the whole girl on the side of the road killing off people was excellent. The brothers seem to get out of trouble a little too easily here (and in future eps). I did like the introduction of Dean into Sam's life, and yeah, Dean was a little bit of a jerk initially, but he definitely puts off less of that vibe as you go along.
Wendigo
Spoiler:
Not my favorite, definitely weaker than the Pilot and the next episode, though I did like the Wendigo creature and how the bros went on the hike with no provisions.
Dead in the Water
Spoiler:
Probably the best total episode of the first disc, great Dean stuff working with the kid, a good female guest lead, and nice mystery.
Phantom Traveler
Spoiler:
good stuff, but weaker than the last episode. I think they were a little stupid for getting on the plane if they knew it was going to crash. I guess they had to make sure that they had the demon captured in one place so they could exorcise it, but that was a big gamble. You figure they could've called in a bomb threat or something to keep the plane grounded.
And I just watched Bloody Mary
Spoiler:
Easily my favorite episode so far, creepy as hell, a little reminiscent of "The Ring" but completely and totally effective. Especially Mary crawling out of the mirror at the end. I loved how Charlie avoided the mirrors to not get killed, and the ending was brilliant--Sam seeing Jessica on the side of the road. What other secret is there besides the fact that he saw her death in his dreams, or is that it? I guess I'll find out.
As a whole, the show reminds me of X-Files along with "The Incredible Hulk"--y'know, a drifter solving mysteries. It's well paced. Of course, I think the one thing I worried about was that there is no female lead, and that continues and probably won't change. Still, it's a good show, but it hasn't quite blown me away yet, despite the goodness of Bloody Mary.
One great thing about the show is the music! I love Dean's taste in music, so that's cool.

I knew that aspect would work for you!
Don't expect for there to be a magic moment or episode that wins you over. At least from my experience, there isn't likely to be one. (Which doesn't mean you can't become overly invested in the Adventures of the Brothers Winchester too.)
I'm glad you're giving it a shot and not hating it.

Well, I suppose you could deliberately let him catch up but -- dude! Every episode you have left in season one is good. (I did well not bugging you to get back at it, don't you think? Guess that's over now. But you can't not finish S1. Your break extension was noticed though, Rico. I was working on a little reality check for myself so didn't bug you.) Once you watch another ep, momentum should kick back in and take over. BTW, I skipped the eps on disc 5 when Amber watched them to save and watch them with you.

If nothing else, you could stick it back in your rental queue. I do still get lots and lots of pleasure from S1.
Spoiler:
You know the way that Tall Tales was a relief from the tension that S2 was building and building? S1, even with its scares and drama, is a season of comparative innocence in a way. S2 Deal-making and Destiny-finding is a different kind of focus for the show. I found it more compelling than S1, and I think that's where the best eps are; but I love being able to watch the boys when their cares were relatively minor.

Too late. I was at Target picking up some shampoo and toilet paper and there was Season 1 sitting there looking at me telling me to buy it, so I did.
I watched the pilot episode again tonight and it was wonderful. Dean is the same old Dean as he is in the last aired episode (I have some thoughts of him though which I will spill later). Sam, however, has changed the most. I realized he's not as innocent as I thought at the beginning of the first episode. He had a lot of knowledge and you could tell he had spent most of his life hunting. He went to college to forget it all and start a new completely different life. Once that life was taken from him, he fell right back into hunting. I do think that as the younger brother, both Dean and John had sheltered him enough for him to have kept some sense of innocence and sweetness but he did learn a lot while he was growing up. I think he learned but he maybe did not experience, like Dean did growing up. Sam was left in the hotel room. As he hunted more and more with Dean, he did become desensitize, which I think happened to Dean, long ago. When he was 16 I think because he talks about an incident that happened when he was 16 so I think that's maybe when he became desensitized.

Shadow Lady!!! That's AWESOME! It's a different experience seeing eps knowing where the boys will go.
(I may end up copy and pasting your comments into the other thread because most of the things I'm thinking to say really relate to the changes in the boys we've been talking about over there.)
I love how they kept playing tricks on each other, trying to top each other. Sam changing the music and glue on beer were fun, but Dean's itching powder was just mean.
The two ghost hunter dudes were also funny. What would Buffy do?
The ghost guy was effective scary, but I just did not buy the whole theory behind him. How people thought him, so he became true. Whatever. I like Dean's line about Santa.
Something Wicked
Spoiler:
I really like the bad guy in this one. When he jumped up and tossed Dean across the room I was like, "Oh SNAP!"
The flashbacks worked, but I think the preached too much the big brother/little brother stuff. Oh, I like how early in the episode Dean said the big brother is always right. But overall it didn't have that many good laughs.
I don't know if I would call it my favorite to date, but it was a really solid episode.
Their room was pimp!
I really like Sam's love interest. I love how Dean told him, "You should marry that girl." Sam always seems reluctant with girls, and Dean pushes him on.
I was also really into the painting story line. One of the better "Monsters of the week." The CGI was great at the end when the ghost girl does this weird thing with her head. Sam's girl said, "Oh, that is so wrong."
Oh, I'm bad with names. What was Sam's love interest name? I like their little talk about Sam thinks he is cursed.

Pretty sure I will always enjoy this episode!
Spoiler:
I totally bought the brothers' prank wars even though that wasn't something my own family did any other time except April Fool's.
Hey, I just remembered this is the one with the actor who played poker with R.J. in real life!!! If I sorted it out correctly, he is the guy on the right (anyone else think the middle guy looks like Conan O'Brian?) I'm pretty sure he's never on camera with Sam and Dean though. Still, it's our six degrees from the Winchesters so I wish I remembered his name. Thanks, RJ!
I particularly like the interviews with the shifting versions of what happened at the hell house. Not only is it an illustration of the way urban legends work, but it also ties in nicely with the actual shifts in the monster that made it so hard to kill at the end.
